Some Christmas culture

Looking for a little more culture in your Christmas season?

Try celebrating “Christmas at the Gallery.”

The annual fund-raiser for the Courthouse Gallery and Museum will be held at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 8 at 125 S. B St. in Exeter. At the center of the event is a Christmas tree decorated with miniature paintings from every artist who has displayed at the gallery. The paintings are then auctioned off with all of the feel and fun of a New York auction house. There is wine, hors d’oeuvres and music to compliment the fine art.

“It is a wonderful night of art and culture,” said Robyn Stearns, who sits on the Gallery and Museum’s board of directors. “It is so unique from any other type of event in this area.”

Another highlight of the event is the annual raffle. This year’s raffle prizes include a 20-by-30 inch oil painting, “Among the Giants,” by popular plein aire artist and gallery founding member Marty Weekly. The other special raffle item is a Christmas Express train set inspired by Thomas Kinkade, the Painter of Light. This 30 scale model train runs on HO track and is lavished with Kinkade Christmas scenes and authentic 2-6-0 engine details. Both will be on display at the event. Raffle tickets are $10 each or three for $25.

“These are really a special treat for the holidays,” Stearns said.

The event is the Gallery and Museum’s largest fund-raiser of the year. All proceeds go toward putting on quarterly art exhibits, artists’ receptions for those exhibits, upkeep on the buildings and utility bills for both the adjacent museum and gallery.

“A town the size of Exeter is so fortunate to have either a museum or a gallery,” Stearns said. “We really hope people come to this event and see what a great treasure we have created here in this community.”

Tickets for the event are $40 per person and can be purchased from Exeter Chamber of Commerce, Exeter Flower Company, NSE Insurance or any board member. For more information, call the Exeter Chamber of Commerce at 559-592-2919.
