Exeter can not take down WYL foe

The Exeter High Monarch football was defeated by Hanford West, 36-14, on Friday, Nov. 9 in Exeter.

The number seven seeded Monarchs beat the number 10 seeded Huskies in almost every category but the score. The Monarchs had more first downs (21-16), more rushing yards (214-126), more total yards (400-390) and more completions (30-24). Exeter, however, also had more turnovers (5-1) and more penalties (10 for 81 yards – 4 for 35 yards).

“We played well from the 20 to the 20,” said Exeter head coach Ben White. “We just could not score once we got into the red zone and the turnovers hurt us.”

Exeter turned the ball over five times with three interceptions in the red zone.

The Monarchs did have another outstanding performance from Austin Cardoza who ran the ball 40 times for 180 yards. Cardoza also rushed for the Monarchs two touchdowns.

“Austin rushed for over 100 yards in every game this season,” said White. “I don’t know if any other running back in the area did that. He also broke the sophomore rushing record held by Cameron Loeffler with more than 1,700 yards this season.”

Senior quarterback Cody Tilley was 12 for 29 and 186 yards passing.

The Monarchs, who finish the season with a 5-6 record, hope to have a good season next year.

“The core of our team is returning,” said White. “We have Austin coming back and a lot of returning key players. We are losing our quarterback, but I think we will be ok.”
