40 …..and counting

On Jan. 8 in an East Sierra League match up against Corcoran, Jannelly Rangel of Lindsay made school history by scoring nine goals in a single game in a 10-0 victory over the Panthers. But before the ink on the record books could dry, Rangel broke yet another school record.

On Jan. 30 in yet another East Sierra League match up, Rangel scored two goals to break the most goals scored in a single season. The previous record was 38 goals and that record was held by Leti Perez who graduated in 2004.

Rangel is sitting at 40 goals with two games left to play on the regular season. Rangel would like to end the season and her high school career with a total of 45 goals, but with two games left and playoff she has a chance to reach 50 goals.

“It is possible to reach 50,” said Jannelly Rangel. “But I will be happy with 45 or 46.”

When talking with Rangel about the two records she already owns, she thinks it would be really neat if her younger sister who is now in third grade broke Jannelly’s records before she leaves Lindsay High School.

“It would be a tradition,” said Rangel with a huge smile on her face. “We got to keep it in the family.”

Rangel knows this is a big honor to break one school record but for her to have broken two school records in a matter of weeks in amazing. Even with her being the record holder for most goals scored in a single season, she only sees herself as maybe in the top five greatest girls soccer players to ever have put on a Cardinal uniform.

Looking toward her future after high school, Rangel would like to play soccer at the next level. She has already been accepted to Sonoma State University but has not received a scholarship to play soccer for the Seawolves.

“If It means I have to walk on at Sonoma then I’ll do it hopefully I will a spot on the team,” said Rangel.

Rangel’s final home game of her high school career is on Thursday, Feb. 7 against Woodlake with a kick off time of 6 p.m.
