Back-2-Back

The Farmersville High School boy’s basketball team (9-1) defeated the Orosi Cardinals (8-2) 67-54 for the East Sierra League title Thursday night in Farmersville. Both teams came into the game with 8-1 records. Farmersville’s only league loss was the previous matchup with Orosi. A game the saw Farmersville blow an 18 point lead.

Farmersville came out playing hard, using speed and a defensive press to throw the Cardinals out of rhythm. Greg Torres had two of his five steals in the first period for the Aztecs who lead 13-8 at the end of the first.

Orosi battled back and took an 18-17 lead with 5:54 left in the half. Senior Cody Hall stepped up hitting two three pointers and a steal to give the Aztecs a 29-28 halftime lead.

The Aztecs opened the third period by making the first five points and at the end of three periods had a 43-38 lead.

The Aztecs kept up the pressure and with 4:35 left in the game had a 52-43 lead. The Cardinals called a timeout and came back with a desperate full court press. Good passing by the Aztecs broke the press and Farmersville came away with the 67-54 victory.

Farmersville head coach Fabian Acevedo said, “Farmersville avenged its only league loss to Orosi. This time Cody Hall showed why he is the leagues reigning two time MVP by containing Orosi’s league leading scorer Ronchel Ortal, (30 points per game) to only 15. The four year varsity senior was assigned defensive duties to guard Ortal and also become the games leading scorer. Hall is only three points away from scoring 1000 points for his career. He would be the first in the school program’s history to do that. Jose Del Real also helped secure the win by scoring 17 points despite playing on a badly sprained ankle that occurred Tuesday against Kings Christian. These two seniors helped our program win back to back league titles and its first outright league title in the school’s history.”

For the Aztecs, Cody Hall had 21 points, three assists and six rebounds. Jose Del Real had 17 points, four assists, three rebounds and two steals. Greg Torres had 10 points, 13 rebounds, and five steals. Sam Metcalf had 11 points.

Coach Acevado said, “It was awesome to see so many fans at the game. For the first time we had to pull out the bleachers on both sides of the court. The team played so hard and worked for this title. It came down to the last game and that was senior night. You could not ask for a better ending.”

The 12th ranked Aztecs open the playoffs by traveling to 5th ranked Chowchilla at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 20, in the first round of the central section playoffs
