Lady Cards advance to semis
After earning the No. 3 seed in the Central Section Division V playoff bracket, the Lindsay girls varsity soccer team downed their opponent, No. 6 Coalinga with a lopsided 11-0 victory on Thursday, Feb. 14.
In their first matchup with the Horned Toads this season, the Lady Cardinals outplayed Coalinga and senior forward Janelly Rangel gave her second highest producing performance of the year. She netted eight goals against Coalinga while Adriana Gutierrez scored twice and Daisy Rodriguez scored once.
Lindsay goalkeeper Sandra Cortez recorded the Cardinals sixth shutout of the season.
The win advanced the Cardinals to the semifinal to face No. 2 Fowler on the road yesterday, Feb. 19. The game occurred after press time and results will appear in next week’s edition of the Sun-Gazette.
“Next we head to Fowler and our motivation is to win and reach the next level,” Lindsay coach Freddy Martinez said.
The semifinal game marked a rematch between the Cardinals and the Redcats. In a meeting on Dec. 13 in Lindsay, Fowler outscored Lindsay 6-3. The winner is slated to advance to the Valley Championship on either Friday, Feb. 22 or Saturday, Feb. 23 against the winner of last night’s other semifinal match between No. 1 Orange Cove and No. 4 Sierra.
The championship game time, date and location will be set once the two final teams are determined.
