Monarchs look stronger for 2013-2014 season
The Exeter Monarchs completed Gary Hylton’s best season while he has been at the helm. Exeter went 18-12 overall with a 6-4 league record and a trip to the state basketball tournament.
The Monarchs look to be in good shape heading into next season. Exeter’s two top scores were Junior Jacqueline Hutcheson who had 245 points on the season. The team’s second leading scorer came from freshman Danica Todd who had 212 points on the season. Three seniors who will be missed next season are Amber Atkinson, Emily Tristao and Katelyn Lopez. Combined they scored 404 points with 141 of those points coming from Lopez.
During the season the Monarchs were able to get some big wins to help build their confidence heading into Central Sequoia League play. Back in December the Monarchs beat Golden West 71-64 before beating Vaughn High School 57-18 in the Avalon Basketball Classic on the Catalina Islands.
Once CSL play was over, the Monarchs found themselves tied for second place with Immanuel and four games behind first place Selma.
Exeter made a run in the Division IV playoffs by beating Fowler 52-30 in the opening round and then by defeating Kingsburg 47-41 to advance to the semi finals against Lindsay. The Cardinals who were already having a historical season, defeated the Monarchs 63-48 to advance and win their first ever Valley Title.
The Monarchs would learn a few days later that their season was not over just yet.
Exeter received an invite to the State tournament where in the first round the Monarchs faced St. Paul High School of Santa Fe Springs.
Exeter will be looking to improve on their 2012-2013 second place finish next season. With the experience of playing in the state tournament, the Monarchs will be a very good team next season and will once again compete for a CSL title.
