Fire destroys Woodlake facility

Fire investigators are still unsure what caused the fire that burned down an old mission-style hotel near Woodlake.

According to the Tulare County Fire Department, firefighters were dispatched at 11:45 a.m. on April 15 to a small fire in a storage unit in the 35000 block of Road 192 at Avenue 344 near Woodlake.

The fire destroyed an old hotel that was being used for storage by a local ag operation and a mobile home that was also used as storage.

The half-acre fire took units from Tulare County, Woodlake Fire District and Cal Fire to contain. Due to the high winds, fire personnel were unable to fully contain the fire until around 3 p.m. By then, the structure was lost.

“The wind is what drove this fire unfortunately,” said Fire Chief Hicks. “The wind just pushed the fire through the structure and onto the grass to the other structures.”

Fire personnel was able to save one family resident. Chief Hicks reported that no one was hurt by the fire. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
